Jasper County supervisors adopt proposed property tax levy after brief public hearing

Jasper County — The Jasper County Board of Supervisors adopted Resolution 26-16 approving the proposed property tax levy for fiscal year 2026/2027 at a special meeting March 24.

Supervisor Talsma moved to adopt the resolution and Chairman Thad Nearmyer seconded; both supervisors present voted in favor. Supervisor Cupples was recorded as absent. A complete copy of the resolution is on file in the office of Jasper County Auditor Jenna Jennings.

The board opened a public hearing on the levy before the vote. About 10 residents attended and asked for more information about the budget statement mailing and whether their taxes would increase next fiscal year, and raised concerns about understanding the mailing and the process for protesting property assessments. "They asked for more information regarding the budget statement mailing and if their taxes were going to be increased next fiscal year," according to the meeting record. One resident commended the board for "keeping the levies low and not increasing tax" while cities and schools continue to increase theirs.

The meeting record does not state whether the board provided detailed responses to those individual tax questions during the session. After the hearing, the board moved to close the public hearing and proceeded to the adoption vote.

The special session opened at 6:00 p.m.; Supervisors Talsma and Nearmyer were present and Supervisor Cupples was absent. The meeting concluded with an adjournment motion and the minutes bear the signatures of Auditor Jenna Jennings and Chairman Thad Nearmyer.
