BLM opens 30-day scoping on wild-horse management; public input encouraged

Mike Tweddell of the Bureau of Land Management told the council that the BLM has opened a 30-day public scoping period for a Wild Horse Management Plan in the local Herd Management Area.
Tweddell said BLM has published a Management Evaluation Report summarizing herd conditions, population estimates, and environmental factors and is soliciting alternatives for management (including fertility-control options, gathering strategies, and monitoring practices). He said stakeholders—including grazing permittees, local governments and interest groups—have been notified and are invited to submit comments for the environmental assessment (EA). Following review of public comments and preparation of an EA, the BLM will hold a further public-comment period on the draft EA before making a final decision.
Tweddell emphasized that public participation during the scoping and EA stages is essential to help shape alternatives and management actions. Several council members and citizens raised environmental concerns and asked how monitoring and population estimates were developed; BLM staff said those topics are addressed in the Management Evaluation Report and will be considered in the EA.
