Board approves CPI trainer agreement to certify in-house staff for nonviolent crisis intervention

The Stockton Unified School District board approved an agreement with Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) to provide instructor certification training in nonviolent crisis intervention and advanced physical skills so the district can develop in-house CPI trainers.
District staff said the program will certify a cohort of trainers—primarily BCBAs and psychologists with some teachers—so those trainers can, in turn, certify additional staff. The training is a five-day program and will support a plan to certify roughly half the district on a two-year cadence because CPI certification expires every two years. "This is specifically for us to have our own in-house trainers," staff said, explaining that bringing trainers to Stockton reduces travel and accommodation costs and expands local training capacity.
Trustees questioned implementation details including selection criteria for staff who will become trainers, the role of teachers in the cohort and whether the district had evaluated alternatives to CPI. Staff said CPI training was part of a Department of Justice agreement that required CPI training for staff; substituting another provider would require communication with the DOJ.
On a roll-call vote the motion passed unanimously.
