Oscoda County board approves courthouse security hires, park staffing, small airport payment and contract renewal

The Oscoda County Board of Commissioners on March 11 approved a slate of routine motions including personnel hires, a small airport payment and a five-year prepaid fuel subscription for the county airport.
Chair Charles E. Varner, Jr. called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. The board approved the meeting agenda and the consent calendar, which included a $10,700 correction to the Trial Courts budget to move funds into the TC Security Part-Time line after County Administrator Michelle Knepp said the funds had been budgeted to the wrong line.
The board acknowledged the hiring of Mr. Andrew Taylor as a part-time special deputy (non-union) with a starting wage of $17.00 per hour and no county benefits. The board also re-hired Ms. Sarah A. Novak as a seasonal county park employee effective March 20 through Dec. 1, 2025, at $14.25 per hour and up to 28 hours per week, not to exceed 1,000 hours for the season.
Court Administrator Tom Pratt raised concerns about courthouse security and training needs. On motions the board acknowledged hiring two part-time courthouse security officers, limited to a combined total of 25 hours per week at $18.00 per hour, and approved transferring $9,700 from contingency into the TC Security Part-Time budget line to cover the remainder of the funding.
The board approved payment of $346.68 to the Michigan Department of Transportation for final accounting on runway rehabilitation and crack sealing work at Dennis Kauffman Memorial Airport (project B-26-0156-1818). The board also authorized up to $6,500 from the Courthouse Preservation Fund to pay for courtroom renovations.
On contract business the board approved the automatic renewal of the QT Petroleum On Demand subscription agreement for the Dennis Kauffman Memorial Airport (effective Nov. 1, 2025–Oct. 31, 2030) and added a five-year prepaid option of $4,780 to the airport contracted services budget; the chair was authorized to sign the agreement.
Commissioners provided committee reports on landfill authority activity, park projects and grant reimbursements, river access sites and library and road commission matters. The meeting adjourned at 11:03 a.m.; the next regular meeting is scheduled for March 25, 2025.
