Board extends Veterans Affairs appointments and authorizes Good Friday cross on courthouse lawn

The Oscoda County Board on March 25 extended temporary appointments for members of the Veterans Affairs Board and approved a request from a local pastor to place a wooden cross and signs on the courthouse lawn during Good Friday observances.
By motion 2025-096 the board extended temporary appointments for Richard Landry, Al Chaney, Roger Stitt, Frank Beek, Tim Whiting, Dennis Cooper and Bob Whittaker through April 7, 2025; the original temporary appointments were made Feb. 25, 2025. The motion to extend the appointments carried by roll call.
The board also approved a request from Pastor Lowell Eastman to erect an approximately 9-by-6-foot plain wooden cross (to be carried in procession), place three 18-by-24-inch stakes on the courthouse lawn visible to the road from April 18 through the morning of April 21, and to allow a 20–30 minute gathering on the county lawn (motion 2025-093). The board recorded the vote and carried the motion.
Veterans Affairs Board member Richard Landry also used the public comment period to thank maintenance staff for work at the Veterans Affairs building and announced a Vietnam War commemoration ceremony scheduled for March 29, 2025, with indoor options if weather requires.
The board’s approvals were procedural and temporary; no permanent appointments or ordinances were enacted during the meeting.
