Oscoda County acknowledges new full-time deputy and sheriff staffing update

The Oscoda County Board on March 25 formally acknowledged the hiring of Jace Lear as a full-time deputy, with a start date of March 12, 2025, at a starting wage of $24.40 per hour and eligibility for county benefits. The acknowledgement was recorded in motion 2025-094.
Sheriff Kann told commissioners that interviews for a STING Officer have concluded, that a candidate has been selected and that an offer is expected in the coming weeks; when filled the department will be fully staffed. During public comments the sheriff also offered community tours of the old sheriff department building prior to its scheduled demolition.
Maintenance Supervisor Rick Burton said utilities for the old building are scheduled to be disconnected on or before April 1, 2025, and that he is coordinating fiber/disconnection work with Merit to preserve Michigan Department of Corrections and EMS system access. Commissioner Jackie Bondar asked whether the building’s generator could be moved to the community center and whether natural-gas reconnection would be required; Burton said the generator is under an annual service contract and explained intentions for handling it.
The hiring and facilities items were approved by roll call. No public objections were raised during the meeting.
