Summary
Pasadena officials announced two public events — an April 17 Chalk Walk and an April 22 Earth Day session — to show elements of the Brookside Park stormwater capture project, which will add 23 trees, a 10-foot-wide planter and capture about 164 acre-feet of water to recharge the Raymond Basin.
Dawn Pechear, the city’s stormwater program administrator in public works, and Pasadena City Councilmember Tyrone Hampton invited residents at Brookside Park to two public events that will showcase the Brookside Park stormwater capture project.
Pechear said the project is one of the city’s six regional stormwater projects and highlighted both below-ground and above-ground features. "We're here today to highlight the Brookside Park stormwater capture project," she said, noting a planned Chalk Walk on April 17 that will "chalk out the below ground components." Pechear added the project will include visible improvements, including "23 new trees, and a 10 foot wide planter with biodiversity and new habitat."
The second event is scheduled for Earth Day, April 22, from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Brookside Golf Course Mediterranean Room, where residents can meet consultant staff and city personnel, view above-ground components, participate in children’s activities and, Pechear said, "even take a plant home if you'd like on Earth Day." Hampton encouraged the public to attend and said additional details will be posted on the project website.
Pechear described the environmental benefits the system is intended to deliver, saying projects like this "remove trash, oil, and grease, and sediment" that otherwise reach local waterways. She added the capture system will "actually capture here about a 164 acre feet of water," which she said will help recharge the Raymond Basin and improve water quality.
City officials directed listeners to the project website for event details and encouraged attendance. Pechear closed the announcement by saying staff look forward to seeing community members at the events.
The announcement focused on public outreach and the project’s design features; no votes, motions or funding details were disclosed during this on-site briefing.
