Board approves most Landers Center expansion bids; one fire‑suppression package to be re‑bid

The DeSoto County Board of Supervisors approved the majority of bid packages for the Landers Center expansion on Jan. 5, accepting packages A–R but excluding package 05‑P for re‑bid after a procedural omission by a bidder.
Doug Thornton reported the received bids for construction packages A–R put the project at about $43 million, roughly $4 million under the projected budget. The bids cover masonry, millwork, fire proofing, overhead doors, glass glazing, concrete floor finishes, plumbing, HVAC and electrical work. Thornton said the one bidder for fire suppression omitted the required certificate of responsibility number, so that segment (05‑P) will be re‑advertised and re‑bid.
Thornton told the board parking was a priority for Landers Center staff: approximately $1 million was estimated for the parking lot work; he estimated the completed project would provide 80% parking capacity for a full‑venue event and noted additional adjacent land could allow future expansion — likely as a gravel lot if used. Supervisor Ray Denison asked for more specifics on chiller and parking details; Thornton said additional parking could be added later if needed.
Supervisor Ray Denison moved to approve Landers Expansion bid package 05 A–R, except 05‑P, and to authorize the Board President to sign; Supervisor Mark Gardner seconded. The motion passed unanimously. The minutes reference Exhibit H.2 for bid details.
