At the April 13 committee meeting staff provided three brief updates: a US Coast Guard housing briefing, a forthcoming CARES sobering‑center lease and a recently signed lease with Geno Animal Rescue.
Staff member Bleidorn said the Coast Guard held a March 10 forum attended by local contractors to discuss its housing needs and that the agency is in an internal feasibility stage after compiling RFI responses. "They didn't elaborate on their schedule," Bleidorn said; he added that local contractors and JEDC have been engaged and that community partners are working on possible solutions.
Bleidorn also reported that a CARES lease for a sobering center is expected to be signed within days and that the assembly has been working on the issue for roughly a decade with continued involvement by the fire department. Finally, Bleidorn said the city manager signed a lease this week with Geno Animal Rescue for property near the food bank so the nonprofit can continue services and fundraise for a future facility.
The committee had no substantive questions requiring immediate action; staff said they would provide further information as the Coast Guard process and the CARES lease progress.
