Summary
The Lands, Housing and Economic Development Committee voted April 13 to support renewing a 21.5‑acre lease of City and Borough of Juneau land to the Juneau Gun Club, forwarding the matter to the full assembly as an ordinance after members praised the club’s volunteer training and community role.
The Lands, Housing and Economic Development Committee voted April 13 to support renewing a lease of 21.5 acres of City and Borough of Juneau land in the Montana Creek area to the Juneau Gun Club and directed staff to move the proposal to the full assembly as an ordinance.
Staff member Bleidorn told the committee the gun club has leased CBJ property since 1977 and that current agreements date to the early 2000s. "Staff are requesting that the lands, housing, and economic development committee pass a motion of support to renew the lease of 21.5 acres of CBJ land in the Montana Creek area to the Juneau Gun Club," Bleidorn said.
Assembly Member Hall moved the committee to support renewal and forward the item to the full assembly, citing the club’s community service and youth training opportunities. "They are good neighbors. I appreciate the fact that our kids have the opportunity to... firearms training and what have you," Hall said before making the motion. Chair indicated there were no objections, and the motion passed in committee.
The committee record notes the lease renewal will proceed as an ordinance under updated CBJ code provisions rather than by resolution, and staff referred members to materials in the meeting packet including the existing lease, a prior extension and a site map. Committee members emphasized the club’s nonprofit status and volunteer operations during the discussion.
Next steps: the committee-supported ordinance will be placed on the full assembly agenda for consideration under the standard ordinance process.
