Elko’s police chief told council the department faces an approximately one-year backlog handling public-records redaction requests and does not staff a full-time redaction team. He said the enhanced Axon software offers automated redaction and improved incident labeling that could materially reduce staff hours.
"It's been about a year of catching up with that," the chief said of the redaction backlog, arguing the newer software would let staff return records faster while retaining manual review to verify results.
The presented financial summary showed an annualized increase in the city’s video/evidence line to roughly $91,200 per year under the proposed five-year arrangement, with a $1,000 down payment to lock in pricing. Council members voiced support for using technology to reduce personnel strain, noting the transparency benefits of timely access to body-camera footage.
The motion to extend the contract passed by voice vote. Implementation steps include the initial payment, staff training on redaction tools and quarterly reviews to monitor redaction backlog reduction.
