Elko finance director: consolidated sales tax down $1.6 million through May

City Finance Director Julie Davis updated the Elko City Council on July 22 that consolidated sales tax (C tax) revenue for the period July 2024 through May 2025 is approximately $1,600,000 (9.45%) below the same period a year earlier.
Davis explained the city receives revenues with a two-month lag and said a large statewide November shortfall was caused by the state switching to a new financial reporting platform. The statewide distribution timing, she said, reduced the November payment and there was not a compensating higher payment later in the year.
"So even if we received that full payment, we'd still be down compared to prior year," Davis said, adding that she expects one more month where distributions may be uneven while the state reintroduces the platform.
Council members pressed for clarity about whether the November decline matched other jurisdictions; Davis said the shortage was statewide and staff is closely monitoring incoming distributions. The mayor urged the state to correct distributions quickly because the city had only one more month of reporting in the current fiscal year to resolve the gap.
The update was informational; no formal council action was taken. Staff said they will provide ongoing updates as state distributions normalize and the August receipt (June revenues) is posted.
