Jurupa Unified School District will hold its first JUSD Week of Service April 20–24 during National Volunteer Week, the district announced on its Education in Action program.
"In JUSD, we believe that teaching students the value of service is important to developing empathy, responsibility, and strong character," said Dr. Hansen, host of Education in Action. She introduced a Pedley Elementary School service project on site at a Riverside County shelter and encouraged other schools in the district to take part.
Dr. Hansen said students from Pedley Elementary "will be bringing in donations that they collected for the animal shelter, and they're gonna be reading to the animals." A Pedley student council member described why the group chose the shelter, saying it was locally accessible, could involve all school families and offered a hands-on way for students to help the community.
"It's good to help the community, and it's good to help everyone," the student council member said. "We feel good because, like, we're giving back to them of what they gave to us." Another Pedley student added that the experience helps students "grow up to be animal heroes in their own way," and encouraged ongoing service as students mature.
Dr. Hansen framed the week as a service-learning opportunity that helps students "turn values into action" and aims to cultivate "compassionate leaders who make their communities stronger." She said district schools will share details about how families can participate. The program did not specify the number or types of donations collected.
The segment closed with Dr. Hansen thanking viewers for supporting the district's "culture of kindness" and the tagline, "We are Jurupa — stronger together."
