Amanda Rogers, representing the Best You Coalition, told Keokuk City Council on May 1 that the organization is holding several community events and trainings this month focused on substance-use prevention, mental health and family support.
Rogers said the coalition's teen fun fair — for sixth- through twelfth-graders — will run Wednesday, May 7, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the Y and will include booths and activities centered on substance-use prevention and mental-health awareness. She invited council members and the public to a compassion-fatigue Zoom presentation for caregivers presented by Patty Treble Leeds, a master of social work, and noted the coalition will post registration information on its Facebook page. Rogers also listed free alcohol- and tobacco-training sessions (May 14, 15 and 20) and described parent cafes held monthly with dinner and child care provided.
Why it matters: The events aim to provide prevention education, caregiver support, workforce training for servers and peer mentoring for parents. Rogers asked council members to attend and collaborate where possible.
