Keokuk City Council approved the initial reading May 1 of an ordinance amending parking regulations to prohibit parking on the northerly side of South 18th Street from Main Street to Carroll Street after the council narrowed the street for cost savings.
City staff explained the public works department requested the prohibition and recommended approval. The ordinance passed its initial reading; a roll call vote recorded ayes from Crenshaw, Cackley, Dade, Tillman, Bryant and Greenwald.
A council member asked about the ordinance's effective date and whether the city would run an educational campaign. Public works staff said, “It won't go into effect till after the street is open. It'll be probably towards the June. And, yes, we'll be sending out on our Facebook page, we'll be posting that it's going to take effect at that time.”
Why it matters: The change reflects a permanent traffic-management decision tied to a street-narrowing project intended to save costs. The city did not waive second and third readings at the meeting, so the ordinance will return for subsequent readings per ordinary procedure.
