Local shelter supporters outline $5–7 million plan for new Elko animal center

Vivian Wright, president of the Local Animal Shelter Support Organization (LASO), presented the group's work and a vision for a new animal center to the Elko City Council.
Wright said LASO has spayed and neutered more than 8,000 animals to date and expects to surpass 10,000 by this time next year because of an ongoing clinic program. She described the current shelter as too small and outdated and outlined a plan for a modern, eco‑friendly facility with expanded spay/neuter capacity, more kennels, volunteer and community education spaces and a continued no‑kill approach.
On funding, Wright estimated a capital goal of "probably about $5 to $7,000,000 for a new shelter" with a phased five‑year timeline (planning/design, capital campaign and construction). She described community strategies for fundraising, naming opportunities and proposed partnerships with corporate sponsors and grantmakers.
Council thanked LASO for its work and praised the volunteer and donor base. The presentation was informational; LASO requested continued council support and awareness of the project's fundraising needs.
