Summary
Recreation Director Brian Borrell reported 614 participants registered for the 2026 baseball/softball season (down from 666 in 2025), described restroom and maintenance issues, and said the department hired Tyler Nippers as a sports assistant who will start full time after graduating in early May.
Recreation Director Brian Borrell gave a wide-ranging update to the recreation committee, reporting participation numbers, staffing moves and maintenance priorities.
Borrell said the 2026 baseball and softball seasons began March 28 with 614 registered participants, down from 666 in 2025; the largest declines came among 3–4-year-old mixed tee-ball and some coach-pitch divisions. He noted successful tournaments that brought teams and economic activity to the city.
Borrell described recurring restroom malfunctions at Henskins and Bronco parks and said he had scheduled a plumber to evaluate upgrades intended to reduce weekend failures. He reported one full-time and two part-time recent separations, has promoted Terrell Millson to full time, and has forwarded applicants to HR to refill part-time roles.
The department has hired Tyler Nippers, a JMU graduate and local volunteer, to assist as sports director; he will begin full time after graduation in early May and has started training on scheduling and administration. Borrell also noted rising participation in pickleball and intentions to brief the committee later on additional facility improvements.
