County approves Travel Nevada grant application with $3,000 possible county match; one commissioner dissents

The Esmeralda County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 3 authorized Goldfield Visitor Center director Natalie Colunga to apply for the Travel Nevada Rural Marketing Grant FY27, seeking $6,000 in grant funds with a proposed county match up to $3,000.
Colunga told commissioners she intends to pursue print advertising (including American Road Trippers) and updated marketing collateral, and she described possible in‑kind match elements such as donated design time or volunteer hours. "I'm asking for a grant of six and our match would be three, a 50%," Colunga said.
Commissioners discussed the application process and timing; Commissioner Rachel Holt said she wanted to see the final application before the county committed to the match and recorded a dissent at the vote. Commissioner Perez made the motion to approve the application submission and Commissioner Zakas seconded; the motion carried with Holt recorded as voting "nay." Colunga said if awarded, the visitor center would return to the board to accept and sign the grant award.
Financial notes: Colunga said the $3,000 match would likely come from the visitor center travel, services and supplies budget and could include in‑kind contributions. If awarded, the grant would be reimbursable and the county would commit match funds at acceptance.
