Esmeralda County’s Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Jan. 6 to retain County Manager Joe Dunn following a public six‑month evaluation of his performance.
Commissioners scored multiple categories including communication, job knowledge, planning and decision‑making. Commissioner Rachel Holt praised Dunn’s progress and recommended continued learning; Commissioner Fred Perez cited accomplishments such as progress on the credit‑card policy, enterprise risk management and coordination with the sheriff’s office. Commissioner Mary Jane Zakas said she appreciated Dunn’s commitment to the county but urged clearer, measurable goals linked to financial reporting.
Dunn, who said his early goal was to assess county operations and stabilize finances, told the board he wants to support commissioners and "help you guys succeed as a Board of Commissioners." After discussion, Commissioner Holt moved that Dunn remain county manager and that his next review be at one year. Commissioner Zakas seconded; the motion passed unanimously.
The review produced both commendations for administrative progress and requests for clearer expectations, especially on communications and measurable objectives such as the proposed quarterly State of the County briefing Dunn will provide.
