Committee adopts nonpartisan Independence Day instructional-observance policy

Rutherford County’s policy committee on April 14 approved a new policy (4.2002) directing the district to provide an annual, age‑appropriate instructional observance of Independence Day during the academic year.
Miss Maxwell, who introduced the item, said the policy complements a previously adopted resolution and gives schools a way to teach historical facts and founding documents in a nonpartisan way. "It should be nonpartisan, and just stick to the historical facts and founding documents," she said, adding the director of schools will pick the day the system observes the material for the whole district.
Members noted the policy is intended to be educational without adding cost; teachers could use existing materials and online sources. The committee moved and seconded the policy and approved it by voice vote.
The committee recorded support from the Captain William Lytle chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and asked staff to proceed with implementation guidance that ensures the observance is age-appropriate and nonpolitical.
