Yerington shelter reports increased live outcomes in 2025; new kennels planned

Public Works Director Paul Shapiro reported to the Yerington City Council on Feb. 23 that the Yerington Animal Shelter recorded positive live outcomes in 2025 and plans program expansions to increase adoptions.
Shapiro said the shelter's K9 program took in 60 dogs in 2025; he reported that 29 of those dogs were adopted, two were transferred to partner organizations and 35 were returned to their owners. Shapiro described those figures collectively as "66 live outcomes." He also said the shelter took in 133 cats and reported 199 live outcomes for the year. Shapiro thanked staff and volunteers, said one dog was euthanized in 2025 for a serious medical issue and noted plans to build 17 new kennels starting the next day. He also described a no‑cost cat spay/neuter program and plans for enhanced social‑media marketing to aid reunifications and adoptions.
Councilman Omar Lopez and Councilman Nick Beaton thanked the director and volunteers for the shelter's reported results.
The figures were presented by staff at the meeting; meeting minutes show the numbers as reported by Public Works Director Shapiro. The apparent difference between intake counts and the reported "live outcomes" was as stated in the presentation and was not reconciled or explained in further detail during the meeting.
