Commissioner Sullivan moved to award the work to KGM Contractors for $3,677,486.55; the motion passed by unanimous voice vote.
The board also approved the annual gravel crushing contract for approximately 15,000 cubic yards (budgeted near $150,000) to the low bidder, and approved Knife River to provide 120,000 gallons of liquid calcium chloride at just over $195,000 for application on Combi Road. County staff noted the chloride policy caps spending and that the award came in below the capped amount.
Commissioners emphasized the public benefit of the Gunflint Trail award to local residents and visitors, and asked staff to continue coordinating funding sources and project timing. Highway staff said the county will oversee contractor application of chloride products and monitor work in the field.
Next steps: staff will finalize contracts and schedules with the awarded contractors and move forward with summer construction and maintenance work.
