Sheriff reports 53 inmates; DA warns federal murder case transport will be costly

Sheriff Derek Foremaster told the Lincoln County Board on Oct. 6 that the county jail currently holds 53 inmates and that North Las Vegas may send approximately 20 additional inmates in the coming weeks.
Foremaster said the incoming placements "may or may not be short term" and noted recent hiring to fill patrol and jail positions. The potential intake could increase operational pressure on the detention facility if transfers occur.
District Attorney April Bradshaw also briefed the board on a pending federal inmate murder prosecution that the county must pursue. Bradshaw said the defendant will be transported and that transport costs are expected to be about $4,000. She said the case was filed in late 2023 or early 2024, has been pending since 2019 in earlier proceedings, and that the defense has filed a motion to dismiss. A court hearing is set for Nov. 12.
Bradshaw said there is no choice but to prosecute the case, and she described coordination with the U.S. Marshals and the federal facility handling the inmate. The county will absorb transport costs associated with the prosecution.
