Commission denies late application for Nevada State Racing Association event amid hunting-season concerns

The Lincoln County Board voted Oct. 6 to deny the Nevada State Racing Association's request to move the TEAM Challenge motorcycle race into Pioche on Oct. 18, 2025.
Cory Lytle told commissioners that flooding in Caliente forced a course change that moved part of the event toward Pioche. County policy requires applications at least 60 days before an event; this request arrived roughly half that time. Commissioner Lisa Poulsen said applications that arrive after the deadline should automatically be rejected and expressed concern about races during hunting season. "If it isn’t even submitted within the 60 days, it should automatically be rejected," Poulsen said.
Commissioner Mike Reese also objected to holding races during deer season and urged that NDOW's input be required. Lisa moved to deny the request and Mike seconded; the board voted to deny the event. Janine Woodworth said the county should consider an ordinance to set specific blackout dates so promoters know when events are not permitted.
The applicant had obtained BLM approval to change location, and staff said promoters had communicated the timing pressure caused by flooding. The board nevertheless denied the short-notice request, citing policy compliance and public-safety and hunting-season conflicts.
