Yerington recognizes state poetry champion; proclaims April Child Abuse Prevention Month

At the start of its April 13 meeting, the Yerington City Council recognized Mari Basaca Fuentes for being named the 2026 Nevada Poetry Out Loud State Champion. Mayor John J. Garry presented a recognition noting the accomplishment brings pride to the community.
The council also received a presentation by Lyon County Human Services and adopted a mayoral proclamation declaring April as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Yerington. The proclamation, read at the meeting, outlined collaborative prevention, intervention and foster-care support programs available in Lyon County and urged community participation in related awareness activities throughout April.
The proclamation and recognition were ceremonial items on the agenda and did not require council action beyond their presentation.
