Yerington council adopts resolution detailing out-of-cycle municipal election seat procedures

Interim City Manager Jerry Bryant explained the resolution implements state requirements to stagger council seats so that two seats come up every two years for four-year terms. Under the resolution the two candidates with the highest vote totals would receive the four-year seats while the third-highest vote getter would receive the remaining two-year term; any ties would be settled by lot. Councilmember Omar Lopez moved to approve the resolution; the motion was seconded and carried unanimously according to the meeting record.
The resolution is intended to keep Yerington’s municipal election cycles consistent with state law and reduce ambiguity about how partial/appointed terms are returned to the ballot.
