Summary
The board approved valley-curb modifications at the Goat Island Bridge entrance to accommodate bikes and golf carts and received an update that bridge planks have deteriorated; the town reported a $100,000 FEMA award not yet received and said Parks will reinforce and double-bolt planks.
The Town of Cramerton Board of Commissioners on Sept. 2 approved modifications to the Goat Island Bridge entrance from 8th Avenue, and heard a separate maintenance update on the Goat Island Utility Bridge.
Staff proposed changing the existing curb to valley curbing to improve ingress and egress for bicycles and golf carts, and presented a quote of about $1,950 from Robert Mason and Sons Grading and Paving. Town Manager David Pugh said funding for the small curb modification could come from the Powell Bill account. Commissioner Atkinson moved to approve the modification; Commissioner Abernathy seconded the motion and the board voted 5-0 in favor.
Separately, the board discussed maintenance on the Goat Island Utility Bridge after staff reported that planks have deteriorated quickly because of flooding and heavy equipment use. The town said it has been awarded $100,000 from FEMA but has not yet received the funds. Planks were last replaced in August 2020; a prior replacement in 2019 cost $26,000. Parks and Recreation staff plan to double-bolt the plank sides, reinforce ends with heavy-duty lag bolts, replace several boards if needed and adjust boards so gaps do not exceed a half-inch. The bridge carries a five-year warranty, and engineers noted warping and splitting of rough-cut timber is a normal reaction to exposure.
Parks staff said repairs should begin in about a week and they expect the bridge to remain open during work.
