Saint Peter accepts state water-protection and solar grants, approves solar purchase and DNR application

Saint Peter’s City Council on Feb. 9 approved several grant-related actions to support drinking-water protection, renewable energy and park development.
Pete presented a Minnesota Department of Health source-water protection grant of $15,000 to support nitrate‑reduction best-management practices in the recharge area west of Saint Peter and said Nicollet County Board of Soil and Water would administer the grant. “They are our partners that have connections with the farming community,” Pete said. The council accepted the grant by resolution and roll-call vote.
On renewable energy, staff recommended accepting a Minnesota Solar on Public Buildings grant that would cover roughly 70% of a proposed 39.9‑kilowatt solar array at the new City Hall, with the city pursuing a 30% federal tax rebate to complete funding. Pete said the total project cost is $144,180 and recommended Solar Connection Inc. as the contractor. The council approved accepting the grant and authorizing the purchase.
Finally, staff requested authorization to apply for a Minnesota Department of Natural Resources outdoor recreation grant with a $250,000 city match to support the Gorman Park project; staff flagged required historic‑preservation reviews and contracting steps. The council authorized submitting the application by the March 31 deadline.
Council members praised staff’s grant work and approved all three resolutions by roll call; no recorded votes opposed the measures.
