Wyoming council approves reclassification to Public Safety Manager; one council member objects to pay increase

The City of Wyoming approved reclassifying an existing police property and technology technician/crime‑analyst position to a Public Safety Manager role effective Jan. 1, 2026.

Chief Bauer told the council the incumbent already performs many of the supervisory, audit‑preparation and records‑management duties that the new classification formalizes. The reclassification raises the first‑step hourly rate from $35.62 to $42.51 under the proposed pay scale; the new position is exempt (no overtime) and includes higher minimum qualifications—a bachelor’s degree in a related field and four years of public‑safety experience with administrative responsibilities.

"She's already doing most of these things already," Chief Bauer said, explaining the change is intended to retain institutional knowledge and align responsibilities with compensation and supervisory expectations. The chief said the employee is enrolled in leadership training and would maintain relevant professional memberships.

Member Yeager voiced concern about the percentage increase in pay (cited in the meeting as 19.3%). Council discussion covered whether the role would remain responsible for analyst functions and whether the new position would be comparable to sergeants in the pay structure; staff said it would sit between officer and sergeant pay scales and would not be a represented position.

Member Anstead moved to approve the reclassification effective Jan. 1, 2026; Member Schilling seconded. The motion carried by voice vote; one council member recorded a nay during the vote.
