County staff propose expanding telematics to more vehicles to cut maintenance costs and improve safety

County staff told the Budget, Capital and Personnel Committee on April 13 that expanding telematics across the county fleet could reduce maintenance costs, improve vehicle readiness and provide location and crash‑reconstruction data for incidents.
Terry, who presented the proposal, said telematics provide data on miles driven, vehicle use and engine alerts and can notify maintenance staff when a vehicle registers a check‑engine light. "We would bring a request to you for about $25,000 to get all of the fleet that currently does not have those telematics installed to do that," Terry said, and staff estimated ongoing annual costs in the tens of thousands. Administrators said the software cost is about $200 per vehicle per year and that some parts of the fleet already use Verizon Connect or Geotab systems.
Committee members asked about speed monitoring, data continuity in cellular dead spots, privacy and whether other counties have implemented full‑fleet programs. Staff answered that telematics can be set to notify for threshold speeding, can retain GPS records offline until cellular service is available and that many counties use telematics for sheriff and highway vehicles, though countywide implementation varies.
The committee did not take immediate action; the administrator said he will bring a resolution requesting contingent funds next month and, if approved, the ongoing cost would be incorporated into future fleet budgets.
