The Franklin County Community School Corporation board on April 13 approved a superintendent recommendation to cancel four teacher contracts for the 2026–27 school year because projected enrollment reduced the district’s staffing need.
Superintendent Dustin Garring told the board the recommendation followed the district’s established process based on class-size formulas and enrollment projections. "This is the hardest thing to do as a leader," he said, describing private conversations with affected staff and their gracious response.
Garring said the action "does not represent crisis for us" but rather an alignment of staff to projected student need, and emphasized the district’s hope to rehire teachers if enrollment changes. The superintendent said he would not read the affected employees' names aloud at the meeting "out of respect for them," though the board had the names in front of them.
After brief discussion acknowledging the difficulty of the decision, the board moved to a vote and approved the reduction in force by voice vote, announced as 6–0.
The action is administrative and based on enrollment formulae; staff said they followed the district’s established procedures and will inform affected employees and provide any required notices under applicable policies.
