Pasadena ISD rolls out Canvas LMS and ParentSquare; district reports over 99% parent contact

Melissa McCullough and Tracy Powell said Canvas was adopted as the district—s learning management system for grades 4 through 12. Staff offered a training pathway last year with a district-wide teacher foundation course and continued professional development into the summer, enabling teachers to log in, share units and collaborate. Presenters reported more than 2,000 assignments launched by week three and said MasteryConnect is integrated into Canvas with prepared assessments for teachers.
The presenters also demonstrated ParentSquare, a unified communications platform the district said provides two-way contact and language translation tied to Skyward. The district reported that over 99% of students had a parent contact through ParentSquare in the first two weeks of the school year and that staff sent roughly 22,000 messages in the previous week. Staff noted features such as district- and campus-level banners, translation to parents—preferred languages via Skyward integration, and safety-alert overrides for emergency notices.
Trustees asked about substitution of apps (for example, whether ParentSquare replaces Remind) and how multiple systems (Skyward, Elevation, Embrace, Canvas) integrate; staff explained Skyward remains the student information system while Canvas is the instructional hub and Elevation supports ELL strategies.
What to watch: The district indicated ongoing teacher training and daily virtual office hours to support Canvas use, and weekly trainings for special education staff on data tools tied to individualized education plans.
