Pasadena ISD adopts $665.9M budget and sets tax rate at 1.2255

Pasadena Independent School District trustees voted to adopt the district—s FY2024—25 budget and to set the tax rate needed to support it after a public hearing on Aug. 27.
The adopted budget totals $665,912,009, the board was told. The general operating (maintenance & operations) budget is $543,425,063; the food service budget is $49,024,946; and debt service totals $73,462,000. Presenter Ben Poppe told trustees the proposal includes a 2% general pay increase the board previously approved and assumes the full eligible amount of disaster pennies.
Trustees approved a maintenance and operations tax rate of $0.8855 per $100 of taxable value and an interest and sinking rate of $0.34 per $100, for a combined rate of 1.2255. Poppe said the adopted rate uses the maximum disaster pennies available and does not require voter approval.
Board discussion and Poppe—s presentation emphasized multi-month budget work to close an earlier estimated deficit (described as as high as nearly $40 million during initial workshops), reductions through attrition, and a 3% reduction to department budgets. Trustees said their goal was to preserve programs while responding to reduced federal ESSER funding and unadjusted state basic allotments.
The motion to adopt the budget and set the tax rate passed after general assent; the board then moved on to routine business and capital projects.
What happens next: The district will implement the FY2024—25 budget and collect taxes at the adopted rate unless a future action amends either decision.
