Savannah council approves St. Patrick’s Day parade permit, sets festival restrictions

The Savannah City Council on March 12 approved a permit for the city’s Saint Patrick’s Day parade to step off at Abercorn and Gwinnett Streets at 10:15 a.m. on March 17 and adopted a related resolution setting festival dates and temporary restrictions for March 13–18, 2026.
Mayor Van R. Johnson told the council the parade is a major annual event and noted the scale the executive committee provided to the chamber: “6,000 on foot, 300 units and 50 floats.” The council voted by voice to issue the permit after a motion and second.
Council also passed a resolution authorizing the city manager to implement special-events provisions in the code — including limits on motor coach parking, temporary tow zones and restrictions on private permits in public rights-of-way — for the festival period. The resolution’s enactments are intended to help the city manage public safety and traffic during the multi-day celebration.
The chamber included remarks from the parade chair and 2026 grand marshal Marty Hogan, and city staff said they would deploy public-safety personnel and city marshals during the event. The council approved the permit on condition of coordination with event organizers and public-safety plans.
The festival will proceed under the conditions the council authorized; the mayor and parade committee encouraged attendees to follow posted rules and public-safety directions.
