Parks and Recreation report: Old Town parklets, reopened ball field and playground work move forward

Deputy Director Buescher updated the Public Art Commission on multiple parks and capital-improvement projects during the department’s annual report to the commission.
Buescher said Old Town El Camino improvements and parklet work are underway and "we are 18% completed at this time," adding that crews will construct parklets one side at a time to maintain access. Staff said they will avoid starting parklets before the Sip and Stroll event and hope most parklets will be in place before the street fair and chili cook-off.
On capital improvements, Buescher reported Ball Field Number 3 has officially reopened after fences were removed on Monday, Feb. 9, and the city council accepted the project. The Camino Real Park playground has had the old playground removed and staff are installing pour-in-place rubber surfacing; reopening is tentatively scheduled for March or early April pending weather and inspections.
Staff also updated the commission on micro galleries (a pilot of one to two structures pending MOU and final cost estimates) and reconfirmed five pedestal locations for the sculpture walk at Tustin Legacy Park; a previously planned beer garden improvement was put on hold while landscape improvements were prioritized.
Commissioners praised Parks and Recreation’s outreach and the department’s annual report, which staff said had a 2025 theme of “Full of Awesome” and included more than 96,000 event attendees across programs.
