Board approves Illustrative Mathematics for TK–8 curriculum

The Westminster School District board on March 19 voted unanimously to adopt Illustrative Mathematics (Imagine Learning) as the district’s TK–8 mathematics curriculum.
Forty pilot teachers evaluated several programs over the 2025–26 school year. Michelle Scheiber, who led the pilot, said the team prioritized mathematical thinking and reasoning, open and engaging tasks, instructional coherence, student engagement, assessment and teacher support. After two pilot phases local teachers recommended Illustrative Mathematics because it better supported low-floor/high-ceiling tasks and number sense development.
Trustees asked about selection process, TK inclusion and family supports. The adoption team said Illustrative Mathematics includes a parent portal with unit-specific guidance and language dropdowns, which staff said will help families understand the different instructional approach. District staff estimated the adoption cost at about $3,000,000 spread over eight years; the purchase is planned to be funded from committed balances set aside for textbook adoptions.
The board approved the recommendation 5–0. Superintendent Hansen and curriculum staff said rollout will include professional learning for teachers and family-facing resources.
Vote details: motion to adopt was made by Trustee Francis Wynne and seconded by Trustee Gurney; vote was recorded as 5–0.
Next steps: staff will finalize procurement and professional learning timelines and present implementation details to the board in subsequent meetings.
