Anderson Elementary students showcase Vietnamese dual‑immersion program at Westminster board meeting

Students and staff from Anderson Elementary School performed and described the school’s new Vietnamese dual‑language immersion (DLI) program at the Westminster School District board meeting on Jan. 22.

“Through dual language immersion, students develop high levels of bilingualism and biliteracy,” Principal Kim Breckenridge told the board, describing the program’s start in preschool, transitional kindergarten and kindergarten and its focus on cultural responsiveness and academic achievement.

A student ensemble from Anderson’s Vietnamese Arts and Culture Club performed a traditional folk piece, Trang Cuem. Principal Breckenridge said the club is open to grades K–6 and invited trustees and families to the students’ next community performance on Feb. 13 at the Flower Street Festival.

Trustees and district leaders also used the meeting to highlight district bilingual achievements: officials said Warner Middle School received a California Association of Bilingual Education (CABAE) Seal of Excellence and that the district will send a team to the CABAE conference in March to accept the award.

Superintendent Hansen and trustees discussed district sponsorships for Tet and Flower Street events and outreach plans; trustees recommended outreach and social‑media promotion to amplify DLI programs and festival participation.

The showcase underscored the district’s effort to promote multilingual instruction and community engagement, with administrators encouraging families to attend upcoming cultural events and participate in enrollment outreach for early learning and DLI programs.
