Westminster board adopts immigration‑response policy, staff to train principals ahead of March 1 compliance deadline

The Westminster School District Board of Education voted Feb. 19 to adopt updated board policies that include a new policy addressing the district's response to immigration enforcement and a policy on appropriate event interactions.

Superintendent Dr. Hansen told the board the updates reflect changes in state law and require the district to prepare immediately: "We have to be in compliance by March 1 with the new law," Dr. Hansen said, adding that staff have begun meeting with office managers, principals and community liaisons and will train principals on internal response protocols.

Board members asked how the changes would be communicated to staff and families. Dr. Hansen said the revised policies will be posted on the district website, shared through leadership channels and via ParentSquare, and reflected in mandated policy‑acceptance procedures.

Trustees approved the adoptions as presented after a brief discussion. The board also voted to rescind older policies identified on the agenda; staff said rescissions are part of ensuring policy language matches current legal requirements.

The new policy on immigration response, as described during the meeting, limits what enforcement agents may do on campus and clarifies records and access protocols; staff said specifics of the internal protocols will be shared through principal training and leadership materials.

The board did not hold a substantive public hearing on the underlying law at the meeting; trustees and staff emphasized the district's intent to support families while maintaining campus safety. The board recorded the adoptions and associated rescissions and directed staff to proceed with implementation and community notifications.
