Teachers union leader says board curtailed public comment, cites upcoming bargaining

Angela Stegall, president of the Marysville Unified Teachers Association, used the April 14 board meeting to both congratulate recognized educators and criticize the board’s handling of public comment time.
“People were told that they had to cut their comments down and keep their comments to 2 minutes or less,” Stegall said, calling the decision disappointing and urging the board to allow speakers adequate time to be heard. She noted a bargaining session is scheduled for the following day and that MUTA expects productive discussions; she also referenced recent settlements in neighboring districts as context for bargaining outcomes and staff priorities.
Stegall’s remarks were delivered during the portion of the meeting reserved for employee-organization updates. The board did not act on public-comment procedures at the meeting.
