Superintendent Doctor Austin told trustees that the grant will fund implementation work across K–5 reading/LA, K–5 math, grades 6–8 math and algebra, and emphasized that SustainEd had previously worked with the district on literacy frameworks. Trustees asked why the contract was before the board; the superintendent said TEA does not require board approval for grant contracts but the district’s internal policy requires board review for contracts over $50,000, and she brought the item forward for transparency.
Trustees asked about classroom disruption and whether the curriculum represents a new program or a rebranding of prior materials. The superintendent said Bluebonnet (the state/TEA name in the district’s materials) aligns to Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and reflects iterations of curricula (Amplify/Eureka/Carnegie) with enhancements; she said training and change management are built into the implementation plan.
Trustee Burton made the motion to approve the contract; it was seconded and carried 6–0.
Next steps: district staff will coordinate implementation timelines and teacher training, and SustainEd will deliver the technical support described in the implementation plan.
