HILLSBOROUGH, N.J. — The Hillsborough Township Board of Education voted Dec. 22 to move forward with the full‑spring‑break calendar option for the 2026–27 school year after reviewing committee recommendations and survey feedback from students and staff.
Cassie, a student council representative, told the board she received 352 survey responses from 9th–11th graders and said 58.3% of respondents favored the longer spring break, citing more downtime and scheduling needs such as AP testing and family plans. District staff told the board that when they surveyed teachers and HEA leadership, the preference also leaned toward the full spring break.
Board members discussed tradeoffs, including the desire by some upperclass students and athletes to end the year earlier and concerns about aligning religious observances. "I appreciate how the calendar was adjusted to accommodate those who observe Passover," a board member said during debate; another member noted the education committee’s work to find a practical compromise.
After brief discussion, the board took a roll call on the calendar line item and approved option 2 to be the district calendar forwarded for implementation. The motion passed on a roll call; the board also advanced multiple education consent items tied to curriculum, field trips and an amended ESEA grant application.
