District staff briefed the board on this year's centralized enrollment process, which replaced multiple separate applications for fundamental and comprehensive programs with a single application that lists available schools and capacity. Staff said the change was intended to reduce duplicate submissions and give families clearer options.
Enrollment staff explained steps taken to reduce confusion: pre-application letters to families with QR codes, timeline clarifications, and in-progress approvals for special-education placements. A support-services leader said the district piloted the consolidated application with fundamental programs in prior cycles and expanded it systemwide this year.
Board members thanked staff for outreach but pressed on two topics: why some schools appear at capacity and how to improve customer service when parents call. Staff explained that "capacity" is a planning designation tied to staffing and budget allocations; a principal may have physical space but cannot be staffed without budgeted positions. The board asked staff to clarify which enrollment steps sites handle and which the district controls and to improve parent-facing guidance and call responses.
No formal policy was adopted; staff will return with recommended refinements to timelines, capacity messaging and customer-service protocols.
