How to register your kindergartner in Mukilteo School District

Judy Hemminger, the district's administrative assistant for elementary education, led a step-by-step walkthrough of kindergarten registration, telling families: “Children who turn 5 years old by August 31 of this year and reside within the Mukilteo School District boundary are eligible to attend kindergarten.” She said the district website (mukilteoschools.org) hosts the Family Access account setup and the online enrollment form and that paper registration packets are available at schools and the district office.

Heminger listed required documents: verification of birth date (official or unofficial birth certificate or passport) and verification of address (a current utility bill, the first page of a lease or a purchase agreement showing the guardian’s name and address). She recommended families provide two emergency contacts and described how to upload documents during the online enrollment process. For immunizations, she said the district can look up Washington-state immunizations in the state system; families with out-of-state immunizations must provide a physician-signed immunization certificate.

Heminger gave logistics and contact details for families who need help: registration help is available via the district’s registration help email box and the district office at 9401 Sharon Drive in Everett (phone 425-356-1274). She said account confirmation messages and password-reset links will be emailed to guardians after they create a Family Access account.

On timing, Heminger confirmed that the district opens kindergarten registration now and will send information about open houses and kindergarten orientations from resident schools closer to spring; Spenta Clack added that school starts Tuesday, Sept. 1, with kindergarten conferences Sept. 1–3 and students’ first regular kindergarten attendance starting Friday, Sept. 4.

Heminger also described the district’s early-entry option: children with birthdays from Sept. 1 through Oct. 31 may pursue early entrance testing. If a family qualifies for free-lunch status, the district provides the evaluation at no cost during a testing window in early August; otherwise an assessment by a licensed Washington psychologist at family expense is required. To be approved for early entrance the student must meet the district standard thresholds on seven developmental areas (district staff said a standard score of 120 or the equivalent of 91% in each area) and final approval is decided by the student’s school principal; approved early entrants have a two-month trial period during which either the parent or school can request that the student pause and enroll the following year.
