The Beautification and Public Art Commission approved a recommended artist for Coconino County’s Bookmobile design on April 13 after a selection panel reviewed 49 eligible applications. Luke, staff project lead, reported the panel’s scoring criteria and recommended Dana Kainberg as the artist to produce a custom vinyl design for the bookmobile’s exterior. "Our recommended artist is Dana Kainberg," Luke told the commission.
Staff described the vehicle as a 24-foot Freightliner and said the artwork will primarily cover the larger rear carrier panels on all four sides; the library will contract the vinyl printing and installation. BAS will pay the selected artist $4,000. Commissioners on the selection panel — including Commissioner Cruz and other community members — praised the quantity and quality of submissions. Commissioner Cruz said the design represents the many places the bookmobile will visit and that the artwork’s responsiveness to varied environments stood out.
Chair Roulon moved to approve the selected artist, a motion that was seconded and approved by voice vote. The commission indicated unanimous approval during the meeting. The commission did not discuss a formal contract at the April 13 meeting; staff said the design will need additional approval from the Library Commission on April 23 before implementation begins in May.
