Staff reported a wastewater treatment plant upgrade status and a performance award, passport program activity and training needs, public-works project updates (Stanley St., Jordan Rd., Alpine St.), parks camera installations, and community event recaps; council then entered executive session on labor and land acquisition.
City staff used the Aug. 7 Granite Falls City Council meeting to update the council on several operational items, including the wastewater treatment plant upgrade, passport services, local infrastructure projects and recent community events.
Community Development Director Jensen told the council about direction for the comprehensive plan process, including planned workshops and a joint meeting with the Planning Commission. Deputy City Manager Jeff Balentine presented the Passport Dashboard through July 31, 2024, and noted staff training for passport technician Harmon and other operational updates including financial summaries and an old city hall remodel.
City Manager Brent Kirk reviewed a public works report prepared by Operations Supervisor White that covered progress on the Stanley Street project, upcoming work on Alpine Street, and a reported low chlorine concentration in an area of the water distribution system; he also cited a Jordan Road sewer-line issue that the city is addressing.
Consultant Police Chief Thom Dalton briefed the council on calls for service, camera installations at Frank Mason Park, a news item on Q13, and community events including Show 'N Shine and National Night Out. Administrative staff (Ms. Goravanchi) said the senior center HVAC estimate and grant applications are in process, noted that Show 'N Shine raised approximately $1,500 and recommended the senior center open a separate Key Bank account for donations.
Mayor Matthew Hartman and councilmembers commended staff and noted community engagement: Councilmember Griggs said Show 'N Shine drew about 270 cars and fundraising proceeds for the Boys & Girls Club remain being processed; Councilmember Glenn reported residents asking about additional trash cans during the event; Councilmember FitzGerald and Straughn also recounted community interactions.
Later in the meeting, the council entered executive session to discuss collective bargaining negotiations and potential land acquisition; the session began at 8:20 p.m., was extended by 10 minutes, concluded at 9:05 p.m., and no action followed before adjournment.
Meeting materials list project- and personnel-related items for follow-up, including passport technician training, senior center HVAC funding options, and public-works project monitoring.
