The Palmdale Aerospace Academy board on April 14 approved a STEAM summer enrichment pilot for TK–12 students and authorized funding not to exceed $100,000 to run the program. Administrators described the pilot as a hands‑on integration of math, English language arts and science that would start small this year (half‑day sessions) with the goal of expanding in future years if successful.
Administrators said the budget covers staff time, campus security, food service and supplies; they intend to use available grant funds and would return for additional authorization if participation exceeds projections. About two dozen teachers expressed interest in staffing the program in a school survey; enrollment would be first‑come, first‑served or by lottery if demand exceeds capacity.
Board members approved the motion after discussion about staffing ratios, curriculum alignment and the pilot’s relationship to credit recovery (administrators said the enrichment program is separate from credit recovery). The program will be piloted this summer and administrators will bring results and data to the board for consideration of expansion.
