The Palmdale Aerospace Academy board voted April 14 to adopt Board Policy 60‑67, the district’s homework policy developed to comply with the Healthy Homework Act. Administrators said the draft reflects a consensus from administration, counselors and teacher volunteers and is intended to reduce low‑quality, inequitable assignments while preserving practice that supports learning.
Director of Educational Services Mister Schatz told the board the policy was prepared with input from counselors and guiding coalition teams. Board members debated enforcement and equity, with some noting homework can exacerbate disparities when parents cannot provide support. Several board members and teachers said homework can be useful for practice and accountability when assigned thoughtfully.
Board members amended the policy language to require teacher training on designing homework rather than leaving training to an "as needed" provision. On the motion to approve with that amendment, the board voted in favor.
Administrators said weekly walkthroughs and data‑driven grouping will guide targeted support for students who need extra help, supplemented by after‑school programs and targeted interventions. The policy will be implemented immediately, and administrators will provide training resources to teachers.
