Summary
The Niskayuna Central School District board adopted a $121.3 million 2026–27 budget and approved a ballot proposition to purchase school buses; both measures will go to voters May 19 after a board budget hearing on May 12.
The Niskayuna Central School District board voted unanimously to adopt a $121,302,975 budget for 2026–27 and to place a bus-purchase proposition before district voters at the May 19 annual meeting. The board also scheduled a public budget hearing on May 12.
A district presenter summarized the plan as a $121.3 million total with a tax levy increase at the state cap of 2.47 percent. Excluding building-related debt service, the district described the operating increase as about 3.48 percent. The presenter said state-aid growth in the plan is roughly $3,073,000, with more than half tied to an ongoing building project and associated aid phasing.
Board members emphasized conservative forecasting. One board member thanked budget staff for repeatedly revisiting line items to identify modest savings and targeted additions such as funding for contracted athletic transportation and a proposed project-based learning teacher. The presenter said small line-item adjustments produced roughly $25,000 allocated for athletic transportation needs pending recruitment of additional regular drivers.
The board approved the motion to adopt the budget and to submit the propositions to voters by voice vote, 7–0. The board similarly approved placing a bus-purchase proposition on the May ballot by voice vote, 7–0. The presenter said communications and outreach will include presentations to faculty groups, parent organizations and updated web/print materials detailing the budget.
Board members cautioned that the district has squeezed much capacity from existing budgets and that similar exercises may be harder in future years without structural funding changes at the state level. The board said it will pursue advocacy to modernize the foundation-aid formula while preparing multi-year plans for a likely multi-year period of fiscal challenge.
A board budget hearing is set for May 12; voters will decide on the budget and propositions at the district’s May 19 annual meeting.
