Summary
The mayor announced a short-term curbside program allowing Athens residents to set out unlimited trash bags and large items (large-item haul fee may apply) and highlighted off‑campus move‑out donation collection May 1–3 at Lot 40 to benefit local nonprofits.
The mayor of the City of Athens announced a limited‑time curbside bulk pickup window allowing city residents to place an unlimited number of trash bags at the curb for collection, with large items accepted but subject to a special haul fee. He said items must be placed out before 7 a.m. on each resident's collection day and listed prohibited materials: building/construction debris, tires and liquids.
The mayor also described off‑campus move‑out donation drives to collect household goods and other reusable items for local charities. Collection runs are scheduled May 1 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.; May 2 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and May 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with drop‑off at Lot 40. Acceptable donations include furniture, kitchen items, small appliances and unopened nonperishable food, according to the announcement. Recipient organizations named by the mayor included the Southeast Ohio History Center, Passion Works, the Athens B & O Train Depot and a local Lutheran thrift partner.
Residents with yard waste were instructed to contact the city's Engineering and Public Works at 592‑3343 to schedule pickup. The mayor noted that items placed in dumpsters or at curbs during move‑out may also be appropriate for donation to listed partners and encouraged residents to use local donation channels.
The mayor said the city’s code office manages the program and advised callers with questions to contact that office. No change in collection providers was announced; the mayor named Rumpke as the city’s hauler.
