Westminster students showcase Merits STEAM program and regional competitions

Two Westminster High School juniors presented the district’s Merits (STEAM) program to trustees, outlining hands‑on coursework, competitions and leadership opportunities that connect students with internships, research and industry partners.
Algar Povedo explained that Merits provides “real world courses” and described participating in cybersecurity competitions, including CyberPatriots and a capture‑the‑flag event at UCLA where the team advanced to semifinals. Povedo said students also attended an AI symposium and networked with industry partners, and that some students presented research on AI and gender bias.
Michelle Shim said Merits offers student‑led experiences that foster leadership and community outreach, including a student‑led Hispanic in STEM conference and STEM fairs at elementary and middle schools. Shim described project‑based learning — including a chemistry/biotech project and an InvenTeam design project — and said the program helps students take ownership of learning while building career pathways.
Trustees praised the presentation; one trustee invited the board and community to the Girls in STEM conference scheduled for March 17. The students thanked teachers and mentors and encouraged trustees to attend future events.
The presentation provided trustees with examples of student achievement, competition results and outreach that trustees said they would like to see showcased to the broader community.
